Overview

Minnesota Nursing Assistant Course Overview

Build your knowledge of nursing assistant care with 45 hours of online didactic instruction using Hartman’s Nursing Assistant Care: Long-Term Care, 4th Edition. Choose the path that fits your needs.

Two ways to use this course: Facilities may use our online instruction within their Minnesota-approved training program. Individual students may use it to prepare to challenge Minnesota’s knowledge and hands-on skills exams.

For facilities: online instruction for your approved program

Minnesota approves the Hartman 4th Edition curriculum we use. Curriculum approval and training-program approval are separate. This standalone online course is not a complete Minnesota-approved nursing assistant training program.

Your facility must ensure that our online instruction is covered by its program approval and meet Minnesota’s instructor, documentation, and supervised practical-training requirements. The complete approved program must include at least 75 clock-hours, including at least 16 hours of supervised practical training. Our 45 online hours are separate from the complete program’s total. Your facility arranges and documents the remaining approved training and hands-on experience.

For individuals: preparation for the challenge exams

Minnesota allows challenge candidates to take the nursing assistant exams without first completing an approved training program or clinical hours. Our online course helps you study nursing assistant concepts; you will also need to prepare for the hands-on skills exam.

You must pass both the knowledge exam and the hands-on skills exam. Completing this online course alone does not provide Minnesota certification or placement on the Nursing Assistant Registry. Challenge candidates cannot work as nurse aides in Minnesota nursing homes or certified boarding care homes before passing both exams.

What you’ll learn

Topics include resident rights, communication, infection prevention, safety, personal care, nutrition, elimination, vital signs, mobility, and care for residents with special needs.

Course hours

Online didactic instruction: 45 hours. These are the hours for our online course. They do not include a facility’s lab, supervised practical training, or other in-person instruction. They do not replace preparation for the hands-on skills exam.
