More About Social Work

As we looked at, social work is a large and important field in the healthcare system.  If you are passionate about working with people and helping them through different stages of life, then social work might be the path for you.  Here is a closer look at some important parts of the social work field.

What are the education requirements of a social worker?
There are many paths to becoming a social worker and even more jobs that are similar to social work.  A social worker’s education requirements can vary by state and employer.  Some social workers have a bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW).  Clinical positions in social work involve a master’s in social work (MSW).  Once an appropriate degree is achieved, a license and/or certification is usually required.

What is the job outlook of a social worker?
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, social work is expected to increase faster than the average jobs over the next several years.  They projected that employers in healthcare for social workers would increase by 20 percent over ten years, until 2026.

What is a social service designee?
A social service designee works under the supervision of a social worker.  They assist in developing a care plan for the patient by exploring the patient’s needs and identifying appropriate resources.  A social service designee can work as an advocate for the patient and assist in making sure the patient’s needs are met.  They often work in long term care facilities and work alongside a large team of medical staff and with the patient’s family.
