How to Conquer Organization

How to Conquer Organization

Organizing can be unique to each person and does not often have a cookie cutter answer to “if you do this, you will be organized”.  Instead, you need to identify your area of disorganization and then imagine what it would look like if it was organized.  Or think about how you would be able to better function if that thing or space was organized.  Organization also has to be something you can keep up with throughout the year.  Let’s break down organizing into how to start organizing and then how to maintain it.  First, here is a list of things you can do to start being organized whether at home or at school/work:

  • Make a list of what you want organized and prioritize it.
  • Define organization and what you want out of it.
  • Get rid of things you don’t need or use anymore.
  • Give everything a place.
  • Use a calendar and make a schedule.
  • Write things down.
  • Create files and sections for paperwork.
  • Label boxes.
  • Set deadlines.
  • Use checklists.

To maintain a lifestyle of organization, you have to look and think beyond one day or hour of cleanup.  Here is then a list of things you can do to maintain all the hard work you put into your organizing:

  • Focus on learning to put things back where you took them from or where they belong.
  • Be continuous with decluttering and getting rid of things.
  • Stick to your schedule.
  • Maintain files and sections for paperwork.
  • Restock supplies as needed.

Last tip to being organized, is don’t be afraid to ask for help.  If you know or see someone who is organized, try asking them about what works for them or some pointers they could give you.  Ask for help in decluttering or getting rid of things too.  Often an unbiased perspective can be of great assistance when trying to organize.  There are also a lot of great free resources for organizing, available online or at your local library.  Try one or some of these tips this month to conquer your organization!
