Home Health Aide

This summer are you looking for a new career path?  Or are you considering advancing your career?  Consider exploring a home health aide!  Here are three questions and answers about what a home health aide is all about.

What is a home health aide?
A home health aide is a certified nurse’s aide who specializes at in-home personal care assistance.  They provide care to the elderly and disabled and allow patients to remain in the comfort of their own residence.  Home health aides may assist with activities of daily living, exercise, administer medications in some situations, assist with wound care, monitor vitals and much more.  Many of these tasks are skills obtained through a nursing aide certification but are individualized to each home health need.

Why become a home health aide?
This position, according to the department of labor, is expected to grow faster than the average job.  Positions in this field of work are increasing largely due to the need for additional patient care as a cause of injury, illness and old age.  Nationwide, the average hourly wage is $11.46.  Becoming a home health aide is a rewarding position as it is often one on one patient interaction and can be an opportunity to provide comfort and possibly make a difference in their care and life.

What does it take to become a home health aide?
The prerequisites include having a certified nurse’s aide certificate and completing a reading test.  The next step is to complete the home health aide coursework.  The home health aide course is offered through We Care Online and consists of a twenty-hour course.
