Healthy Aging

In the United States today, people are living longer than they were 100 years ago. However, adults are facing chronic health conditions now more than ever before.  According to the National Institute on Aging, close to 61 percent of adults ages 65 and up deal with multiple chronic health conditions.  So, although we are living longer, Americans are still dealing with major health problems as they age.  Many of us look at how to not only live longer but maintain our health and possibly improve it as we get older.  The National Institute on Aging has put together some tips to follow on how to age in a healthy manner.  First, they recommend getting regular exercise and participating in physical activity.  You can choose to stay active in many ways throughout your day, from cleaning your home to walking the dog.  Exercising can be intentional time set aside to get active and could include activities such as swimming or riding a bike.  Exercise and physical activity have many benefits to your health, including lowering your risk for certain disease and as treatment for some conditions.  Another recommendation from the National Institute on Aging is to monitor the food you eat.  They advise that the food we eat can influence your weight, and your risk for certain health conditions.  It is important to talk with your health care provider about your nutritional and dietary needs on a regular basis.  As aging is inevitable for all of us, the fact that there are things we can do to manage our health as we age is important for us to know and take part in.
