Winter Health Concerns

December is here, and the cold weather has hit most of us!  Therefore, it is easy to want to bundle up ourselves and those we care for when heading outside.  We may think about ways to protect ourselves from common cold effects such as frostbite and dry skin and even about common winter ailments such as cold and flu.  However, there are some surprising health concerns to be aware of in the winter, that you might not have known.

  • Allergies and asthma. These are both often thought of around springtime when spending more time outdoors. However, asthma can be increased due to the cold weather entering the lungs and inflaming them, resulting in asthma symptoms.  Allergies can also be increased due to more time spent indoors because of the outdoor cold.  If there are things you are allergic to in the space you are spending an increased amount of time in, one could have increased allergies.   These could include pet allergies or even mold.
  • Heart Attack and stroke. These are both at higher risk during the winter season. Cold weather forces your heart to work hard to pump blood through your body.  This can result in heart problems for some people.
  • Increase joint pain can be a cause from cold weather and changes in the pressure system.
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder. Feeling blue in the winter can be real. Symptoms of this include feeling tired, anxiety and depression.

For all health concerns make sure to follow up with a health care provider.  You can protect yourself, your family/friends and your patients by taking extra precautions of protection this coming winter season.  Stay informed and help educate those around you.  Information was sourced from: https://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/6-unexpected-ways-winter-affects-your-health/70000486
