6 Ways to Show Confidence in Public Speaking

Most of us have had to present information at some point, to a group of other people. Maybe it was for a school presentation, a work meeting or for a committee.  Regardless, public speaking isn’t something that comes naturally to everyone. In fact, many high schools and colleges offer public speaking classes in an effort to train people to be better at it.  If you’re dreading your upcoming presentation or maybe you have always turned them down, have no fear! Here are 6 ways you can show your confidence in public speaking and be successful:

  1. Come prepared. If you know in advance you are going to be speaking, make sure to take the time to practice.  Review your material and key points.  You can try practicing in front of the mirror or in front of a family or friend.  This will help boost your confidence and help you remember more of what you are trying to communicate.
  2. Make eye contact with your audience. If you’re one for speaking with notes, make sure to take your eyes off the page and connect with your audience.  This shows your confidence to your viewers.  If looking at people only makes you more nervous, try looking around them or finding a friendly face in the crowd.
  3. Speak up. Confidence in a presentation includes speaking loudly.  Especially in front of a large group of people, it is important that you are speaking loud enough that everyone can hear you.
  4. Dress for success. Take pride in who you are and dressing well shows others that you have confidence in yourself.
  5. Let your personality shine through. If you enjoy humor, throw in a joke or two.  Be yourself and your audience will see confidence in who you are.
  6. Stand in confidence. Present yourself with good posture and avoid pacing around.
